Peter Scott

Miles Real Estate

Sometimes we think we know a person and then we find out that is not actually the case.

Peter Scott

Having met with Peter Scott yesterday, I found there is a lot more to the man than just Peter Scott, the Real Estate guy. In fact Real Estate has only been a small part of Peter’s working life.

After leaving school (Parade for 6 years, followed by a year’s boarding at St Pats in Ballarat-don’t ask!), Peter became a qualified electrician in which profession he worked for eight years. He then changed tack and worked in the Not for Profit sector for a number of years. He began working with disadvantaged youth in residential care and then did youth work in Dandenong followed by working with the long term unemployed in South Melbourne for an organisation called Breaking the Cycle. Peter attended Phillip Institute to study Youth Work as well. During this time he also met and married his wife Andrea who he met through diving (Peter was the diver and Andrea was the first female SCUBA technician in Victoria…more about her in another story!).

After nine years in this field, Peter then joined Infoxchange Australia a Not for Profit IT company. They were self funded and did work for other NFPs. During this time, Peter visited 80+ aboriginal communities to set them up online and then went to East Timor at the request of the Victorian Government to do similar work.

This was then followed by him working in the highrise Public housing towers setting up networks and setting up online communities. This led to him being part of Green PC which refurbished computers after the switch over to the year 2000 and all the panic of the Y2K bug. He was in partnership with Microsoft by this stage and this meant working with some very big clients. This job lasted for 12 years but the recycling of computers became harder as competition from stores such as Aldi increased and so he parted ways.

After taking some time out for a family trip, Peter returned to work with a telephone consulting company which he didn’t enjoy and so lasted six months there. Fortuitously at a school parents party he was speaking to another parent who asked if he’d considered Real Estate….and so began his current role at Miles Real Estate.

What Factors Influence Your Success?

On a personal level:

Peter’s past employment history means he has more life experience and understanding of people…he’d like to think he’s not the stereotype of a Real Estate Agent. He genuinely loves to chat with people. His age and experience also help. He loves finding the right house for his clients or conversely getting a great price for his sellers. Peter was calling auctions within 12 months in the firm which is a major achievement. He also continues to train monthly and has done specific training modules.

From the firm’s perspective:

Miles Real Estate have been in business for 95 years in the very same office. It is one of the biggest independent agencies which can mean more individualised service. They mainly concentrate on their local area of Banyule and consider they offer a high quality of service.

Challenges

Peter feels that sometimes he takes too much to heart and if things are not going well it is a reflection on him. He is always in for the long haul and is loathe to give a property back if it’s not selling well. And there is also the age old problem of balancing working hours with family life.

Why do you support Marcellin?

Peter and Andrea support Marcellin as they appreciate the way the school operates and conducts itself. They have liked the way the school looks after their two boys and Peter finds it very different to when he went to school. They have found it is different to some other schools and think it is a good community. You get out what you put in, and the Scotts have been fantastic supporters of many events throughout their time here, enthusiastically embracing what is on offer.
